Skill Training in Eklavya Vocational Training Center – Group B

1. Preparing Paper Bags:

In an effort to reduce plastic use and to promote the use of paper bags we started making paper bags using recycled paper in our institution. The students make these bags skillfully and finish them with decoration like Warli painting or floral paintings.

  • The first group:-

While first teaching the children the skill of folding the paper, not all the children become aware of the skill of folding the paper, but with the guidance and demos of the teachers, the children gradually realize it. And they fold the paper, skillfully.

  • The second group:-

Cut the paper in a straight line with the help of scissors. In this, a group of children who can hold scissors are trained to do paper cutting. Also training is given on which hand to hold the scissors and how to cut it in a straight line.

  • The third group:-

The teacher imparts the knowledge of how to apply gum on both the cut and folded paper and how much to apply. Also, show how applying too much gum tears the paper.  It is also important to show them to identify the top and bottom.

  • Fourth group:-

In this, training is given on drying the paper bags made by applying gum and placing the dried paper bags in the right place.

  • Fifth group:-

The students of this group sell the finished paper bags. They visit Medicals as well as Visit various stores to survey about their requirements, the size and their expected cost budget.

2. Making Cloth Bags:

The students are taught stitching which allows them to make beautiful cloth bags which can be made to order. This also reduces the overall plastic waste and promote cloth bags.

3.Teaching sewing machines:

This activity is conducted throughout the year. Children's level is ranked according to their performance. This activity is taught according to each group.

  • The first group:-

The first step is to teach the kids how to turn the big wheel of the machine and keep the lower leg moving. Most of the children turn their pedals upside down while doing this training so the machine runs upside down. In such cases, they are trained by giving actual demos. And they are made to constantly practice this motion.

  • The second group:-

Threading the sewing machine. In this, the boys and girls are introduced to the places where the thread is to be put. Children often forget while learning this skill. Repeatedly doing this activity makes it easier to remember and grasp.

  • The third group:-

While teaching the skill of stitching in a straight line, boys and girls draw straight lines on the cloth. After that, they are trained to sew cloth. Otherwise, many children stitch in a silent manner. So, the demo is given in the right way.

  • Fourth group:-

In this skill of cutting cloth, children are introduced to the first digits. Students should be able to show the numbers accurately when their teachers ask them. This is required for the identification of major tapes, chalk, cloth, scissors. After that 1 inch of the major tape is a number. Demonstrations of how to cut cloth by explaining the width and height of inches are done by them. Children also need verbal and physical support for this skill.

  • Fifth group:-

The group, which has the ability of sewing in a straight line currently has the work of sewing the belt of the bag while doing the sewing work. With proper guidance and training, training is given in sewing the belts of the bags and sewing the side straps of the cloth bag.

4. Jute Bags Making:

The students are also taught how to make bags out of the stronger material which is Jute which is also decorated with beautiful fabric paintings. The students carry out all these activities from start to the finish.

  • The first group:-

First, we train the children to take the height and width of the paper pattern with the help of Measure tape. After that, they are trained to place the same pattern on the jute cloth and mark it with chalk from the side of the paper pattern. After that the skill of cutting cloth is taught.

  • The second group:-

The boys and girls in this group are very important while teaching the skill of threading the first machine to sew the cut fabric on the sewing machine. Students like to thread with great interest, but there are problems with threading the same thread in seven places with 1 to 7 digits. This skill often takes a lot of time.

  • The third group:-

The students in this group sew the stripes on the side of the bag. Stitching needs to be done properly while doing this.

  • Fourth group:-

The students in this group are trained on how to attach the side strap to the base of the bag. It is important to have an accurate measurement between each part which is taught while training.

  • Fifth group:-

In these students are trained to make straps, as well as how to stitch the chain on the bag.

In this way children are trained in different activities.

5. Making Poha Papad:

The kids of our Suhit Jeevan Trust, Pen makes a variety of tasty Papad like Poha Papad, Potato Papad, Palak Papad, Tandul (rice) Papad, Nachani Papad, Kurdaya, Mirgund, etc.

Not only do they make these papads but they also pack them neatly in bags appropriately as per their weight.

They perform all activities under the guidance of our special teachers; this activity is preferably taken in summer (optimal time for drying papads). One of the specialties of Pen city is the papads which are exclusively available here. We have realized this to undertake the production and taught the same to our special kids with twofold intention. One is to allow our students to take part in the local economy and secondly, to prepare them for open employment.

  • Nursery & Gardening:

Gardening can have many health benefits for people with disabilities and can provide a source of exercise, friendship, simulation, and relaxation.

It is a healthy, stimulating activity that can be enjoyed by the people of all abilities. It also acts for the development of various sensory and fine motor skills, but above all, it teaches specials the qualities of caring for something, nurturing the new life with full love and care.

Our kids are involved in many gardening activities including watering, planting, and sowing, pruning, clipping, weeding, mulching, flower picking, etc.

The best part is to know that we also grow fully organic vegetables in our garden which are ultimately used for cooking the midday meals of our school’s Annapurna Food program.

  • Rice Cultivation Training:-

One activity which is taught to the students, which is part of the rural area and an essential part of India is farming.

We train the special kids of Suhit the skill of farming on a small-scale.

The students are taken to a farm where they first observe the farmers how they are working on a farm and after that they join the farmers in the work. The farmers along with the special teachers teach the kids skills as per their skill level.

  • Fishery Training:-

In order to facilitate Community Based Rehabilitation, the students of Suhit Jeevan Trust are taught fishing. In this the students are taken for fishing and under the guidance of experienced fishermen and their special teachers the students are guided and taught how to catch fish.
